Common questions

Straight answers about Arabic dialects, about teaching Arabic to children, and about how PopPond works.

Arabic and its dialects

Can I learn Arabic words before learning the alphabet?

Yes. Sound and meaning come first for every language learner. PopPond shows each word in Arabic script and Latin transliteration side by side, so the script arrives gradually.

What are the first Arabic words to learn?

Concrete everyday nouns: animals, food, colors, household objects, body parts. Words you can point at, which is exactly how PopPond's topics are organized.

Should a child learn Fusha or the family dialect first?

The family dialect, because it is what the child already hears and can use immediately. Fusha comes later through school and reading. If you are still choosing, the guide to which Arabic dialect to learn works through the questions parents ask first.

How do I teach Arabic to toddlers?

Short, frequent and concrete. Name real objects, repeat daily, and use pictures and real voices instead of translating.

How do I teach my kids Arabic at home?

Consistency beats intensity. A few minutes a day in the dialect your family speaks, tied to real objects and daily routines.

At what age should a child start learning Arabic?

As early as you like. Vocabulary and accent are absorbed most easily before school age, but there is no cutoff and no wrong time to start.

About PopPond

Questions parents ask most, and the ones about the app itself.

Which dialects does PopPond include?

Seven: Lebanese, Egyptian, Syrian, Palestinian, Moroccan, Algerian and Fusha.

Are the recordings real people?

Yes. Every word is recorded by a native speaker of that dialect. Nothing is synthesised.

Does PopPond work offline?

Yes. Every photograph and every recording ships with the app, so it works on a plane, in a car, or anywhere without signal.

What devices does PopPond support?

Phones, tablets and Chromebooks.

How do I switch dialects?

Tap the dialect selector. You can change it on any word, at any time, and the change is instant.

Does PopPond have ads or accounts?

No ads, no sign-up and no accounts. Buying sits behind a grown-up check.

What's free?

A generous set of words is free to get you started. A subscription unlocks every topic and every word, including new ones as we add them.

What data does PopPond collect?

You don't need an account or any personal details to use PopPond. The app sends usage events to PostHog so we can see what works, sends a smaller set of events to Meta and TikTok to measure PopPond's own ads, and uses OneSignal to show messages inside the app. None of it carries a name or email address. The privacy policy lists what goes where.

Is Fusha included?

Yes. Fusha is one of the seven dialects and you can choose it at any time. Many families use it alongside the dialect spoken at home.

What age is PopPond for?

Two to six. A child who cannot read yet taps a photograph and hears the word.

Which languages is the app itself in?

English, Arabic, French, German and Spanish. The app language and the Arabic dialect are independent of each other.

Subscription

Do I have to pay to use PopPond?

No. A generous set of free words to get you started. Subscribe anytime to unlock every topic and every word.

What do I get with a subscription?

Every topic, plus new topics as they are added. There are no ads, no account and nothing to sign up for.

What happens if I cancel?

You keep the free words. The subscription topics lock again until you subscribe.

Can I cancel any time?

Yes. The subscription renews monthly until you cancel, and you manage or cancel it in your App Store or Google Play account. Canceling stops the next renewal; your access continues to the end of the period you already paid for.

Is there a free trial?

No. The free words are the trial. Subscribe when you want every topic and every word.

Why is there no annual plan?

There is one plan and it is billed monthly. Nothing is locked in for a year. Subscribe anytime to unlock every topic and every word.

Does it work on more than one device?

The subscription belongs to the App Store or Google Play account it was bought with, so it follows that account onto the phones, tablets and Chromebooks signed in to it.

Can my family share it?

Family sharing is handled by Apple and Google rather than by PopPond, so whether a subscription can be shared depends on the family settings on your App Store or Google Play account. The free words need no subscription and are there on every device.

Does the subscription work offline?

Yes. Every photograph and every recording ships with the app, so it works on a plane, in a car, or anywhere without signal. A subscription changes what is unlocked, not what has to be downloaded.

Does every word have all seven dialects?

Almost. Moroccan and Algerian Darija cover nearly the whole library, and the other five dialects cover most of it. When a word has not been recorded in the dialect you chose, PopPond does not show that word at all, so your child never taps a picture and hears nothing. More recordings are added over time.
